MCD INSERT
MCD Monocrystalline Diamond Tools — Ultimate Sharpness for Mirror-Finish Machining
Product Overview
MCD (Monocrystalline Diamond) is the hardest cutting tool material available. Its continuous, grain-boundary-free crystal structure allows the cutting edge to be ground to nanometer-level sharpness, with an edge radius as fine as 0.01–0.05 μm. In ultra-precision machining of non-ferrous and non-metallic materials, MCD tools deliver a mirror finish directly from the cut — eliminating downstream lapping and polishing and significantly shortening total process time.
Key Advantages
Feature Benefit
Hardness HV 8,000–10,000 Outstanding wear resistance; tool life many times that of carbide
No grain boundaries Superior edge sharpness; surface roughness down to Ra 0.01 μm
Excellent dimensional stability Minimal wear ensures consistent accuracy over long production runs
Polish-free mirror surface Fewer secondary operations and lower cost per part
Low friction coefficient No built-up edge; burr-free, tool-mark-free surfaces
Suitable Materials
Aluminum alloys, oxygen-free copper, brass, precious metals (gold, silver, platinum), electroless nickel plating, acrylic (PMMA), optical plastics, graphite, green ceramics and composites.
※ Not recommended for ferrous materials, as carbon diffusion at elevated temperatures causes abnormal tool wear.
Applications
Optical lenses and mold cores, laser reflective mirrors, consumer electronics housings and light guide plates, watch components, semiconductor and LED parts, aerospace aluminum structures, precision medical components.
Machining Recommendations
Use on high-rigidity, low-vibration CNC vertical machining centers or precision lathes
Pairing with an ultrasonic spindle or ultrasonic tool holder further improves surface quality and tool life on brittle materials
Apply high spindle speed with shallow depth of cut and light feed; use oil mist or cutting oil for lubrication
Avoid interrupted cutting and impact loads to protect the cutting edge
